'What is next?' Q&A with author Robert W. Sullivan IV

Robert W. Sullivan IV, author of The Royal Arch of Enoch, is currently working on another great project and he's here today, answering questions about his second book.

Movie lovers will love it!

Biff Tannen (Thomas F. Wilson) symbolizes Typhon (seen here in "alternative 1985", Back to the Future 2) of the Egyptian Mysteries (Osirian Cycle) in the "Back to the Future" trilogy. - Cinema Symbolism: A Guide to Esoteric Imagery in Popular Movies

Hi Rob.  Can you tell us a little about your current project?
Robert: My second book is about esoteric, numerological, and occult symbolism in popular movies.

What is the working title of your book?
Robert: The title is “Cinema Symbolism: A Guide to Esoteric Imagery in Popular Movies”.

Where did the idea come from for the book?
Robert: It is a continuation and extension of Chapter XV of my current book titled “The Royal Arch of Enoch: The Impact of Masonic Ritual, Philosophy, and Symbolism”. Chapter XV (the final chapter) is called “So Dark the Con of Man” and deals with Masonic and Enochic symbolism in film.

What genre does it fall under?
Robert: Filmography and Esoterica.

What is the one-sentence synopsis for your book?
Robert: From its Facebook “Like” page: “Esoteric, numerological, astrological, mythological, alchemical, kabbalistic/cabalistic/qabalistic, and occult imagery, iconography, and symbolism is analyzed and discussed from such films as The Exorcist, Back to the Future trilogy, Star Wars (Episodes I-VI), The Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Wizard of Oz, Universal Studios horror films (a/k/a "Universal Horror"), The Omen trilogy, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Harry Potter films, James Bond movies, The Matrix trilogy, and many others.”

Who or What inspired you to write this book?
Robert: It is something I planned while working on “The Royal Arch of Enoch”. I wanted my second book to be non-Masonic yet to be about symbolism, this book fits the bill perfectly.

Are you finding it easier to write the second book? What are some of the different obstacles that you have encountered while working on your current project (if any)?
Robert: I would not say easier as this book is on a different subject than my last one, yet some of the themes are the same. The obstacles on "Cinema Symbolism" are the exact same as the last one: organization of complex material.  That's to say some movies are overloaded with symbolism while others contain scant or trace symbolisms yet ones that are highly important. A few weeks ago I organized the chapter titles which has made writing it more easy as now I have a definite outline to follow.

What else about your book might pique the reader’s interest?
Robert: The reader will learn things they did not know before and to view these movies from a symbolic point of view.

NaNoWriMo Tips!

It's that time of the year again.  The time when authors enter National November Writing Month, challenging themselves to write a 50k word novel in 1 month! Is it possible?  Of course!  Are you going to go crazy doing so?  Likely.  Yet, it's a fun challenge and author Daniele Lanzarotta has a few tips to help you out.

  • Increase your food budget for the month
Most authors already know that they are not going to cook dinner.  No... It's just not going to happen. You need more time to write, so plan ahead because you and your family will be ordering take-out a lot!

Now the serious tips...
  • Setting Goals!
Most nano writers set their goal at 1,666 words a day.  That gives them 50k words for the month.  The problem with that is that you are not counting on those days when you just don't feel like writing.  There is also the fact that you'll likely be much more motivated... and less tired, during the first part of the month.  And you are less likely to run into writing obstables during the beginning of your story.  Set higher goals for the beginning.  Maybe 3k words a day?  You can do it!
  • Write a general outline before you start.
Just point out the main events in your story and while writing, don't be afraid to change your outline.
  • Character Development
Knowing your characters before you start writing the story is by far what will help you the most in finishing your first draft in 30 days.  Once you really know them, it all becomes a matter of how they react to the situations that you are putting them in.
I usually get to know my characters by doing a character profile including personality traits, and I go as far as doing a Q&A with my characters.  Ask them questions about who they are, where they came from, what makes them mad, what are they afraid of, what attracts them in a person...
Give your characters flaws and don't be afraid to let them make stupid mistakes.  No character should be perfect all the time.  Flaws make them interesting and adds to their personality.
  • Write everyday!
Even if you just plan on writing for 5 minutes, write everyday!  There were so many times when I thought I was not in the mood and as soon as I got in front of the computer and started typing, things just came to me.
  • Don't be afraid to write out of order.
If you have a specific scene in mind, write it... even if you have to skip and few chapters and then go back and fill in.
  • NEVER stop to edit while writing your first draft.
I know how tough it's not to do this, but editing while writing your first draft is time consuming and a distraction that you cannot afford when writing a novel in 30 days.  If you think of changes that you want done while writing your first draft, just take notes on what those changes are and where they should go.  The ideal time to implement those changes is while working on your first round of revisions.

Happy Writing!

Happy Book Release Day, Rachel Blumenthal!

Rachel Blumenthal has not only one... but TWO books released today!
Here is a little about Rachel and her books!

Rachel Blumenthal was born and raised in Northern New Jersey.  She graduated
from Boston University with a Bachelors in Elementary Education and a Masters
in Reading Education.  She currently works as a reading specialist in Alexandria,
Virginia.  When not recumbent, Rachel enjoys playing with her kids, seeing how
much reading she can get done before the laundry needs to be moved, and
searching for this now-elusive "free time" everyone is talking about.  Rachel
currently resides in Northern Virginia with her husband and two children.  This
is her first published work.

One Recumbent Mommy

“One Recumbent Mommy: A Humorous Encounter with Bedrest” is exactly what the title of the book suggests. My incredible story of laying down on the job, pregnant with my second child!

My second pregnancy, confirmed in July 2008, started out just like any other- the confirmatory blood test, the obligatory post-dinner purge, the necessary and all-important 3 hour nap from 4:30 pm-7:30 pm right before retiring to bed for the night at 8 pm. You know, the usual. My routine of popping a mint Tic-Tac to stave off nausea first thing in the morning, and my bizarre "only when I'm pregnant" love affair with white bread was also familiar. All in all it was a typical first trimester for me.

When I headed for my 20 week ultrasound, that's when things started to go awry. But this is a humorous book, so don’t be alarmed…read on and enjoy!

Wherever I am, I will Love You Still

Follow the challenges of a temporary family separation due to a pregnancy/bedrest hospitalization from the perspective of a child. This brilliant children’s book is the companion book to “ One Recumbent Mommy: A Humorous Encounter with Bedrest”, also written by Rachel Blumenthal.
