Happy Book Release Day to Thomas W. Bratt!

Return to Sonneberg

“We have him.” Those three words spoken by his friend Sergei Mycoff changed Rusty’s life forever. He had no other choice but to fly to Europe to unravel a twenty-five year old mystery. But he was not prepared for the near death adventure that would lead him across Western Europe into the Communist Zone of East Germany to the town of Sonneberg.

Return to Sonneberg is a novel based on an episode in the life of John “Rusty” Russell a U. S. State Department diplomat who is unwittingly pulled into a scheme to return a spy, who was thought to have been dead for twenty-five years, from Russia to the United States.

The year is 1988, a time of new relations between the Soviet Union and the United States. Rusty is stationed at the U.S. State Department in Washington, D.C. and working in the fray of the fast moving developments between the United States and the Russians. The future of the new relationship between the two countries depends on the outcome of his mission. At the outset the plan seemed simple enough but not all plans, whether simple or not, turn out as anticipated. Rusty did not realize when he accepted the mission that it could cost him his life.

Happy Book Release Day to AJ Walkley!

VUTO by A.J. Walkley, is finally here!

The highly anticipated title that led to a successful Kickstarter campaign just a few months ago is available today on PAPERBACK, KINDLE, NOOK and IBOOKS!

Vuto is only 17 when her third child dies, mere days after birth.

Malawian tradition prevents men from considering a child their own until it has survived for two weeks. Frustrated at not being able to speak to her husband, Solomon, about all three of the children she’s had to bury alone, Vuto forces him to acknowledge the dead baby. Her rejection of tradition causes Solomon and the village elders to banish Vuto from the only home she’s ever known. She seeks refuge in the hut of U.S. Peace Corps volunteer Samantha Brennan, where Solomon discovers his wife has not left as she was told.

When Solomon arrives in the night to attack Vuto, Samantha disregards her oath to remain uninvolved in village politics and interjects herself into the center of the conflict, defending Vuto and killing Solomon in the process.

The women go on the run from Vuto’s village and the Peace Corps, encountering physical, ethical and cultural struggles along the way.

ENDORSEMENTS

"In Vuto, A.J. Walkley has vividly captured the idealism of First World volunteers, as well as the cultural differences they encounter in the countries where they are placed, giving readers a rare glimpse into the issues that aid organizations are fraught with, but which rarely make it into the news."
— Rex Pickett, author of Sideways and Sideways (the play)

"Vuto is that rare combination of creative genius and personal knowledge so necessary for a reader to not only thoroughly enjoy, but also learn. Well done, Ms. Walkley!"
— Jeff Mudgett, author of Bloodstains

"Walkley guides the reader along a path known only to a very few in the world. Her knowledge of the Malawian culture adds such depth to her words that it is hard to put this book down. Vuto is a truly gripping story—a real treasure of a read.”
— Van Heerling, author of Malaika.

"Vuto is a piece of work that takes you for a short time on a journey you would otherwise never dream about. Although it is a fictional work, it is also based on real experience and real facts, and true plights of people in societies foreign to our own. It is a book that tells you, you can take a stand and make a difference if you follow your heart no matter what the circumstances may be."
— Meghan Wolf, Returned Peace Corps Volunteer, Malawi

"The detail that Ms. Walkley captures in Vuto makes you feel you're inside Vuto's world, seeing everything unfold inside her head, and allowing you to experience the personal and moral dilemmas she faces."
— Tracy Lee, international correspondent

"Ms. Walkley's novel is your passport to a fascinating world of foreign lands, cultures and emotions. The writing is as captivating as it is spellbinding - once you start this journey, it is very hard to put the book down. You will turn each page quickly in anticipation of the vivid colors she paints with her words."

The Royal Arch of Enoch by Robert W. Sullivan IV, Esq.

“And Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him.” - Genesis 5:24.

The Royal Arch of Enoch: The Impact of Masonic Ritual, Philosophy, and Symbolism documents an undiscovered historical anomaly: how a high degree Masonic Ritual - developed in France in the mid 1700’s - included elements of the Book of Enoch which was considered lost until Freemason and traveler James Bruce returned to Europe with copies from Ethiopia in 1773. These copies were not translated into English until 1821 at Oxford University. This high degree ritual - titled The Royal Arch of Enoch - documents the recovery of the “Lost Word of a Master Mason”, the Name of God. It is this ritual in particular that has defined, among other things, the American national character. The Royal Arch of Enoch also documents the symbolic restoration of the sun as the premier icon in all of Freemasonry and as the supreme emblem of imperial administration and religiosity lifted from the Ancient Mysteries, incorporated into the Abrahamic Faiths, and carried on in both Blue Lodge and High Degree Masonry.

This book presents a real life “Da Vinci Code/National Treasure” mystery which, until the publication of this book, was previously unknown to history and historians in both the East and West.

God and the Garden – Devotionals for Fruitful Living by Lilka Raphael

Lilka Raphael, author of P is for Prayer - A Devotional, now has a new title available! God and the Garden was released on March 30th.

About God and the Garden:

One of the most pivotal events in the Bible occurred in a Garden. God placed Adam and Eve in a garden. It is in the context of a garden that we too can examine God’s care of us and how gardening principles applied in our own lives can allow each of us to reap the bountiful harvest God intends.

Sometimes we need to recognize when pruning may be necessary to promote better growth. Other times may require that we weed out a few things or even better establish our roots to bring about the changes that will promote us on our proper path.

There are times in our lives we may each need a bit of Miracle Grow and at others we may need more Pest Control. Sometimes we may have to endure stormy weather and at others we require help navigating our clear skies.

No matter what season you may be in, God and the Garden will help you explore how to make the most of it. Topics such as reaping and sowing, being fruitful and digging deep will prompt you to search yourself and seek God’s very best.

Man may plant or work the land but it is truly God who makes a garden grow. You don’t have to wait for another season. There are changes you can make in your own personal “garden” right now. Reap. Sow. Weed. Prune.

Bloom where you are planted now.

God and the Garden is available on paperback and ebooks

Insatiable - A Mermaid's Curse - Chapter 1 Sneak Preview

Insatiable - A Mermaid's Curse

Chapter One Sneak Preview

He’s smiling down at me and all I can do is look away.  Happiness seems to be such a rare emotion for him, it always has, and I know it’s only a matter of time until I become the one responsible for that smile turning into something dark.
He places his finger under my chin, lifting my head up.  “Well, do you regret it?” he asks.
I want to tell him the truth, that I don’t regret it, that I’d rather have had one day with him than none at all, but the words don’t come out at first.  I take a deep breath and I know that I have to lie.  I have to push him as far away from me as I can, because I have no other option.  So I focus on the part that I do regret.  I focus on the fact that when offered my dreams to be made true, consequences didn’t even cross my mind.  Not just consequences to myself, but I also never once stopped to think about how my choices would impact those around me, how they would impact him.
All I can think is that my next words are going to shatter everything that both of us have lived for in the past few weeks.
***
There was only one thing that I ever wished for: to be human.  I always felt like I didn’t belong.  My dad used to tell me stories about the human world and how lucky I was to live in a place even humans considered magical.  I used to believe that to be true.  Everything seemed so fun: swimming all day, seeing the different colors around, and exploring the ships that ended up on the bottom of the ocean.  One day, I stopped feeling like that.
My dad and I lived near an island, which seemed to be owned by one family only; after all, they were always the only ones there.  Every summer when they came, I would swim as close to the island as I could and hide behind the rocks to watch them.  I wasn’t trying to be creepy, I was just curious about their world.
Years ago, when I was eleven years old, I was hiding behind the rocks when I saw the boy who looked a little older than me.  He seemed so mad.  I saw a woman coming out of the house yelling, ‘Blake!  He didn’t mean it!’
The boy just ignored her and ran toward the other side of the island.  That was the day my life changed.  I hated what I was because I wanted to go after him and see if he was okay, but I couldn’t.
All I could do was swim back as fast as I could and hide in one of the wrecked ships that wasn’t too far away from my home.  I was so mad about what I was and how limited I was because of it, that I didn’t want to see anyone.
I finally decided to go home when it started to get dark.  It was only a matter of time before dad decided to send the whole kingdom to look for me.
On the way back, I ran into my friend Desiree.  Like me, she liked to watch the humans every once in a while.  She came to tell me the humans were leaving and to ask if I wanted to watch them go.  I told her I had to get back and that was it.
That was the last time I saw him that summer, but they always came back.  Year-after-year, I watched the boy come back to the island.  I knew that whenever he was alone, he was the saddest being I had ever seen.  I also knew that there were a few things that always made him smile.  He loved reading and writing, spending time with his younger brother, and years later, his little sister. I caught myself laughing with them several times, as he played with her at the beach.  And then there was this year, the most horrible year of my life… the year I turned eighteen.   That was when I saw him with a girl, both lying down on a blanket at the beach, and I felt things that I had never felt before.  When he leaned on top of her and I saw his lips touching hers, I wanted to be that girl.  I wanted to have legs instead of a stupid tail.  I wanted to be the one he kissed.

Happy Book Release Day to Lilka Raphael!

P is for Prayer - A Devotional by Lilka Raphael

"P is for Prayer" is a devotional that takes a different perspective on exploring God's Word and the power available to anyone willing to take a proactive approach to living the best life possible. As an accessible devotional, it strives to engage the average reader who’s looking for a little more out of life.

Prayer is illustrated as a proficient weapon to wage in life's battles, turned to not as a last resort, but instead as a first line of offense in fighting for what really matters most. Prayer, along with other topics such as praise, perspective, patience and peace are examined and explored. They are defined by the role each plays in facilitating spiritual growth and unleashing untapped potential, all in the midst of life's daily demands.

The book is intended to encourage those who may have given in, or find themselves low on hope, to dig in and dig out of whatever depths they may be currently experiencing. Practical definitions and Biblical scriptures illuminate various principles to be considered and implemented in the continual search for progress, promotion and peace of mind.

Real life examples and scriptural references encourage the reader to strive for greater heights and accessible gains, without preachy overtones or magnifying spiritual inadequacies.

"P is for Prayer" strives to unlock the potential that often lies dormant in each of us. Perseverance, prosperity, purpose, and other topics are examined as precepts to be implemented for better outcomes. P is for all of these things and so much more, but most importantly P is for prayer.

About the Author:

As a licensed pharmacist for over twenty years, Lilka Raphael has observed and learned that prayer and words of encouragement hold more healing and restorative power than any prescription alone that she's ever dispensed.  She also believes that the power of prayer can improve anyone's journey, whatever it might be, and be an aid to people in all aspects of their daily lives.

A native of Tallahassee, Florida, and a graduate of Florida A & M University, Lilka enjoys helping people, and finds joy in dispensing an encouraging word whenever possible, along with pills and ointments.  Inspired by Biblical studies, her sharing of insights, and communicating with others about the awesome power of prayer, and what God is capable of doing, has become a calling.  Her testimonies include sharing her personal experience with Autism, and how the grace of God more than compensates for personal inadequacies.

As an avid gardener, plants and flowers tend to absorb a great portion of free time when she's not pursuing literary interests or engaging in family activities.  A long term affair with chocolate fuels a hobby for baking and a zeal for trying new recipes.  She has yet to meet a cookie she doesn’t like.

She currently resides east of Atlanta and practices community pharmacy in Covington, Georgia.  She enjoys living in the country with Rod, her husband of twenty years, along with their two teenage sons.  They happily share their abode with one Shetland Sheepdog, Noel, and one bad kitty, Lucky.

'What's next?' Q&A with author A.J. Walkley

Welcome author A.J. Walkley as she talks about her current project and her NaNoWriMo experiences.

Hi A.J.!  Can you tell readers a little about yourself and your books?

A.J.: My name is A.J. Walkley, author of such titles as Choice and Queer Greer. Choice is about the decision a high school student must make once she discovers she is pregnant, the plot following both her path to abort the pregnancy, as well as her path to keep her baby in alternative endings. Queer Greer tells the story of a girl in high school coming to terms with her bisexuality after she falls for both a boy and a girl upon moving to a new state and school.

What are you currently working on?

A.J.: I have two projects in the works. Vuto, which I wrote the first draft of during National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) 2011, tells the story of a Malawian woman who bucks tradition and must flee from her husband; a Peace Corps volunteer takes her in, leading to an attack by her husband and his accidental murder; the two women must flee, encountering physical, ethical and cultural struggles along the way.
I just finished the first draft of The Pileup during NaNoWriMo 2012; this book follows the stories of every passenger involved in an eight-car pileup on the 405 freeway in Los Angeles one morning, getting into their backstories as their fates in the massive accident are revealed.

Where did the idea come from for the book?

A.J.: I was driving home one day and saw a car swerve in front of me when I realized the driver was on his cell phone. This got me thinking about what was so important that he had to read a text while driving. I thought it might be interesting to write a book that started with that premise and expanded from there.

What genre does it fall under?

A.J.: Probably just traditional fiction.

What is the one-sentence synopsis for your book?

A.J.: A pileup on the 405 in Los Angeles during morning rush hour reveals the lives of the passengers involved, forever connected by one of the worst accidents in recent history.

Who or what inspired you to write this book?

A.J.: I’ve been seeing more and more stories in the media about terrible accidents and injuries caused by texting and driving, so I wanted to incorporate that message into a book in some way. As I wrote it during NaNoWriMo 2012, however, that message became overshadowed by the serious stories each of my characters were dealing with at the time they became involved in the car accident that was caused by a text. Now, it’s not so much a cautionary tale about texting while driving as it is a character-driven story in which that message is only one small factor.

I can imagine that there is a lot of research involved in writing The Pileup. What can you tell us about what the research process has been like and it's obstacles?

A.J.: When writing a NaNoWriMo project, there is no time for research except for what is in your head already. I had years and years of watching terrible car accidents on the news to base my initial draft off of, so that was, in a sense, my "research." As for the ample amount of characters I chose to include, all of their individual accounts of the crash and their back stories just sort of came to me as I was writing, very organically. When I finished the first draft, I was actually surprised by what I had made the characters do and have happen to them. I almost felt like this story came from someone else!

I participated in NaNoWriMo before and one of the few negatives things that I have to say about it is that it took away from my being able to get to know and enjoy my characters like I usually do.   Do you think that NaNoWriMo limits what 'could be' in terms of research and character development or is that something which can be easily fixed during the revision process when you have more time to go back and add to the story?

A.J.: For me, I love the NaNoWriMo challenge simply because it forces you to write, write, write and not to worry about editing as you do, which leaves you with a pretty nice sized rough draft at the end of the 30 days. Because of the need to not edit, however, there are tons of details, especially character details, that need to be added and fleshed out in the weeks and months post-challenge. I am sure there are some writers who prefer to get those details down on the first run. In my writing, however, I find the revision process post-first draft to be a fine time to go back to the beginning and get into the nitty-gritty of it all. Oftentimes, it takes me the entirety of the first draft to really get a feel for who I want my characters to be, so this method works really well for me.

What else about your book might pique the reader’s interest?

A.J.: I think The Pileup would interest readers who enjoy reading books in which different characters take up varying chapters. I really enjoy writing such stories where each chapter is told from the perspective of a different person, eventually having all of those stories overlap and intertwine down the line.
